Interview with Monique Chanae

1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Sure! I’m 21, a mother of two beautiful little divas and I’m goofy

2. Where are you from?
I’m a Brick City girl! (Newark, New for those who don’t know)

3. When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I think it was the first time I actually wrote a picture prompt as a school assignment and my teacher told me I should write more. Every since then I’ve called myself a writer.

4. How did you come up with the title Lighter to my Cigarette?
Before finalizing the title, I had a slew of different ones. I ended up coming up with the title “Lighter to My Cigarette” listening to Ashanti’s song “Baby.” And that one line kinda reminded me of my main character, Kai.

5. What inspired you to write your first book?
At the time when I first started writing “Lighter to My Cigarette”, it was based off these crazy dreams me and my best friend used to have and write down and as I got older, some of the events in the story actually happened to me.

6. When writing this story how did you come up with the concepts of the story?
Life experiences I guess you could say.

7. Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp
In “Lighter to My Cigarette” the message is to never underestimate someone and to definitely be cautious and get their health checked.

8. What books have most influenced your life most?
To be honest, I can’t really think of any off the bat but I’ve read a lot of books that hit close to home.

9. If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
It’d be either Takerra Allen or K’wan. Back in ’09 when I first started writing, if I had ANY questions, I could hit up Takerra and she’d be more than willing to answer them for me and I admire her for that.

10. Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
DamaCargle, Aleta Williams, Shan, Fabiola Joseph, Boo Jackson, Vanna B. the list could go on for DAYSSSSSS.

11. What are your current projects?
“V: Prequel to Heiress”, the Heiress follow-up; “Heiress: The Blood Campaign”, Mink Syndication, Motives: Everybody’s Got One and those are just to name a few.

12. Do you see writing as a career?
Most definitely! I love being a writer.

13. What do you like to do when you are not writing?
You can most likely catch me eating something lol I love to eat! Or I’d probably be listening to my music or reading.

14. Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?
I’d normally say Al-Saadiq Banks because his writing always hits so close to home but most recently, it’s been DamaCargle. Dama’s stories normally take you on a roller coaster ride from beginning to end and there are so many twists and turns, I’m still figuring some of them out.

15. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
To my readers I just want to say THANK YOU ALL FOR PURCHASING MY WORK! Not everybody is willing to give a new author a chance but the feedback I’ve gotten so far is amazing. This is only the beginning and I promise to give you stories you’ll fall in love with.

Sistahs on Lit:  Thank you for taking the time to do this  interview with us.  Could you please tell us a little about yourself?

Tramaine Green:  I am 28 years old. I am a wife to a wonderful man. His name is Aaron. I am a  mother to a four year old girl named Ayanna. About to be a mother again to a  little boy named Bakari. I have 9 weeks left to his arrival. Aside from that,
I'm an avid reader & I write poems.

Sistahs on Lit:  CONGRATS to you and Aaron!!!  What inspired you to write your first book?

Mrs. Green:  Almost two years ago, I was at work. We really didn't have a lot going on in my department, so I just
started brainstorming ideas for a book. I wanted to do something outside of the norm. I had never written one before, but I was an avid reader and writer of poems so it wasn't completely foreign to me...At least the ability to write wasn't. I had always known that I had a gift, I just hadn't made up mind on what I wanted to do with it. Normally, I start things and don't finish. But in this case, I wanted to finish and succeed. I wanted to complete my goal and I did. It  isn't easy taking a risk, but when you do, you feel so much better that you know you at least tried.

Sistahs on Lit:  What keeps you motivated to keep writing?

Mrs. Green:  Mainly, my readers/supporters. I love knowing that I they love my stories. It isn't easy to stay motivated in this writing game, so hearing from my readers/supporters makes a huge difference.

Sistahs on Lit:  What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing your first book to life?

Mrs. Green:  The main challenge was making sure the story came together & made sense. Then of course the editing and rewrites can take up so much time but its worth it of course.

Sistahs on Lit:  What genre do you consider your books?  Do you think you would ever venture outside of that genre?

Mrs. Green:  Contemporary Romance/Drama. I have actually tried urban lit a little in my short story, Forgive and Forget. Let's just say, it will take some getting use to. Lol  But yes definitely.

Sistahs on Lit:    If you could turn any of your books into a movie, which book would it be and why? What actors or actresses would you want to play the characters?

Mrs. Green:  I would have to go with Yours Truly first because it is my baby. Of course it  would be nice to see it come to life on the big screen. I would like to see maybe Morris Chestnut or Michael Ealy play Jaleel. For Kayla, maybe Sanaa
Lathan. And for Alyssa, Gabrielle Union. This is subject to change. :-)

Sistahs on Lit:  I love all of your book covers.  Who designs them?

Mrs. Green:  Thank you so much! My coworker, Alyssa Perez, designed Yours Truly book cover.  My friend & fellow author, Jade Jones, designed Forgive and Forget book cover.

Sistahs on Lit:   Do you think with Kindle and Nook now on the scene that hard covers and  paperback books would slowly become a thing of the past?

Mrs. Green:  Good question! I honestly don't believe they will. There are still some people that prefer paperback and hardback books over ebooks. Even I still like to go the traditional route.

Sistahs on Lit:  Do you have any book signings coming up that your readers can meet you?

Mrs. Green:  Not yet. My books are ebooks right now but I do plan to have paperback books in the near future.

Sistahs on Lit:  Alot of authors are putting out 5-6 short stories at one time rather than  writing a 200-300 page novel, what are your thoughts on this?

Mrs. Green:  I can understand that. It's easier to write a short story than a novel. Besides, we indie authors have to get our name and work out there. We don't want our readers to forget us.

Sistahs on Lit:  How may your readers contact you on social media?

Mrs. Green:  I am on Twitter, Facebook, and I have a blog as well.
                     Twitter:
www.twitter.com/AuthoressTG
                     Facebook: www.facebook.com/TramaineGreenWrites
                     My blog: www.tramainegreen.com

Sistahs on Lit:  Thank you again for the interview and please keep us posted of your future works.  God bless you on a safe and speedy delivery.
