Sistahs On Lit: Thank you for taking the time out for this interview, Ms. Fabiola Joseph.
Could you please tell us a little about yourself.
Fabiola Joseph: I am a lover, a fighter, and a LIBRA lol. If any of you know any Libras, you know what that means. When we’re balanced, things are great, when we’re not… RUN FOR COVER! I am also a movie and music buff. I love the arts and I love writing great books.
Sistahs on Lit: What genre do you consider your books?
Fabiola Joseph: This is always a hard one for me because I try to add a bit of everything in my work. From erotica, which is what I’m most known for, to urban life and I most definitely add a thrilling eruption that leaves you at the edge of your seat. I like to call my writing, urban erotic thriller.
Sistahs on Lit: How did you get started with writing?
Fabiola Joseph: I started writing because I was a lover of words… Donald Goines, Terry McMillan, and Omar Tyree’s words. I read their books in Middle school and was hooked. I wanted to do what they did, I wanted to pull people into my world and keep them there until the very last page. A writer’s power is all in their words and what they can do with them… I wanted that power.
Sistahs on Lit: How did you come up with the plot for Art of Deceit?
Fabiola Joseph: Tangie is a monster even in thought. It was as if shetook over my mind body and soul and wouldn’t leave until I wrote her story. I didn’t have to work hard as for as ideas for The Art Of Deceit. It spilled out of me. I remember sitting there and the Flashing Lights video came on and that girl in the video spoke to me. She was ruthless, and with the lyrics adding fuel to the fire, I started to write.
Sistahs on Lit: If any of your books could be made into a movie, which one? Why did you choose that one?
Fabiola Joseph: A movie, the Art Of Deceit. The reason why is because it plays in my head like one. Even as I wrote it, I say every word I wrote. Now, as far as TV shows, Porn Stars would be best. There is room for a whole cast of crazy characters.
Sistahs on Lit: Do you self-publish or do you work with a publishing company? Why did you make that choice?
Fabiola Joseph: I self publish. I finished The Art Of Deceit in 2008 and went after a lot of publishers and agents, I had no luck. Once I learned how easy it was to self publish with these e-books and POD’s, I went for it.
Sistahs on Lit: How would you describe your book "Porn Stars 1" to a person who may not have read it?
Fabiola Joseph: Porn Stars… More Than Just Moans is a tale of love, self discovery, betrayal, friendship, love and PORN! So many people think that this book is going to be all about porn but that’s why I came up with MORE THAN JUST MOANS. The book is very different from anything that is out there. My co-author and I wrote it from both straight and gay POV’s. We also give you a two dimensional view on what’s going on. I really think that it offers lessons in love, life, and sex.
Sistahs on Lit: Where do you see yourself 3 years from now?
Fabiola Joseph: In 3 years, I would like to be a successful author who can live off of my gift. This is all that I have ever wanted to do. I want to continue creating my worlds and pulling people into them…. only to leave them wanting more… from me! I want to just be healthy, happy, and living my dreams… all of them!
Sistahs on Lit: What advice would you give to an aspiring writer?
Fabiola Joseph: Be true to yourself and your gift. Don’t come into the writing world if you are not ready to work hard. And please, NEVER put out a book just to put one out. I went over The Art Of Deceit maybe 9 times before I put it out, lol. A little obsessive but it all paid off in the end. I love writing, and I also love to read a great book. You should too…. If you want to be a great writer. It’s quality, not quantity!!!!
