Sistahs on Lit Interview with Author Boo Jackson

1. Tell me a bit about yourself.
Well, I'm the oldest of 12 children. I grew up in Wyandotte County; the poorest county in Kansas City, Kansas. I graduated from Wyandotte High School in 2002 with honors. Graduated in the top 10 of my class; number 8 to be exact. I went on to study Psychology in college where I rediscovered my love for writing.

2.  When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I've always considered myself a writer. English was my favorite subject all throughout school, and it's something that I've always enjoyed. I didn't consider myself an author until my first book was published.

3. What inspired you to write your first book?

My baby sister was my inspiration for my first book. I always tell people that I'm an reader first,   author second. After reading hundreds of books I told my sister one day “You know, I could  write a book.” She dared me to write one and the rest is history.

  4.  What books have influenced your life most?
I think I would have to say “Go Ask Alice” inspired me the most. The things that the girl in that   book had  to overcome  showed me that it's always someone out there whose life is worse off  than yours. It showed me to be thankful for what I have and keep my complaining to a  minimum.

  5.  If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

Um, I don't know if I would say that I have a writer who is a mentor. K'wan and Zane inspired   me to write. Well, I take that back, I think I would have to say Treasure Blue could be  considered a mentor. Whenever I have a question about the publishing game, I can go to him and ask him about it, or if I need some advice about something, I can go to him then too. Whether I'm right or wrong about something, I know he'll give it to me straight; no chaser.

  6. What book are you reading now?

Actually, I'm not really reading anything right now. I'm ashamed to say that I've slacked off on   my reading quite a bit. The last book that I started to read was “A Testament of Hope.” It's a   book filled with speeches and writings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

7.  What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

When I'm not writing, I like doing “normal people” things. I like going to the movies, watching    TV, surfing the net, and I'm a facebook junkie.

  8.  Where do you get your ideas for your books
?

Ideas for my books come from everywhere. I like watching people; they inspire me.

9.  If you couldn’t be an author, what would your ideal career be?

I would love to be a social worker. I like the idea of being able to help people; especially if it  involves getting women or children out of of abusive situations.

10.  What was your favorite chapter to write and why?

In any of my books, my favorite chapter to write is the final chapter. That's where I get to bring  the story all together and add a twist on to it. At the end of all of my books, I want the reader to yell, scream, cuss me out, and throw their kindle or nook...hopefully they don't break it though. I can't be held liable. (smile)

  11.  Why do you feel you had to tell this story?

I'll reference my story in “Love Is Blind” for this question. I felt like I had to tell it because I'm  in a position where I can be a voice for those that are too afraid to speak up. I feel like domestic  violence against men is more prevalent than we know. All throughout their lives, men are taught that they are supposed to be strong, tough, and dominant, but that doesn't necessarily pertain to every man. I felt that by highlighting domestic violence against a man in this story, it would shed some light on the scenario and hopefully it could help those that are in abusive relationships.

12.  Can you tell us about your upcoming book?

The next book that I have coming out is called “Dangerously In Love.” It's a book that deals  with a love triangle and shows the true meaning of a scorned woman.

13  How do you market your book(s)?
I market my books using Facebook and Twitter; mostly Facebook.

14.  Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?
Never give up. If writing is something that you feel that you really want to do, go for it. No matter how many doors slam in your face, keep going for it. I was rejected 37 times before I got a chance and even then I still had to struggle to get my name out there. Anything worth having is worth fighting for, so if you want it, keep at it.

Fate was working against little Brian Mauretti. The food that was meant to nourish him was poisoning him instead, and the doctors said the damage was devastating and absolute. Fate had written off Brian. But fate didn’t count on a woman as determined as Brian’s grandmother, Angela DiMartino – who everyone knew as Mama. Loving her grandson with everything she had, Mama endeavored to battle fate. Fate had no idea what it was in for.

An emotional tale about the strength of family bonds, unconditional love, and the perseverance to do our best with the challenging gifts we receive, GOODNIGHT, BRIAN is an uplifting tribute to what happens when giving up is not an optio

Interview with Author V. Brown

1. Tell me a bit about yourself.
My author name is V. Brown I chose V. Brown instead of using my first name which is Valia because I felt like V. would be easier and really most people can’t pronounce my name as simple as it is. Before I became a published author I was a medical assistant and model. I still model when I have the free time to do so, but I quit working as a medical assistant not long after I started to pen my first book Broken Promise. I currently have 2 books out the first one is Broken Promise and the second 1 which released October 23 is the sequel called Black Ice.. I’m a Leo and I fit true to all Leo characteristics

2. When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I would say I first considered myself a writer when I got a response back from my manuscript submission and the company was actually interested in my work.

3. What inspired you to write your first book?
I don’t if anything inspired me to write my first book. About 4 or 5 months before I even began to write Broken Promise on a small sheet of paper I wrote myself a little note saying I want to write a book called Broken Promise fast forward 4 to 5 months later at 4am in the morning after I had just finished reading a book something clicked in my head and I pulled a pen and legal tablet out and began to write. It all pretty much flowed from there.

4. What books have influenced your life most?
I don’t if there are any books that have really influenced my life maybe opened my eyes to some things that they didn’t know much about, but that’s about it.

5. If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
Honestly I don’t have a set mentor. I would like a mentor who has been in the literary world and went through different experiences, but I don’t have one. There are 3 authors that I know if I were to go to them for advice, answers, help in general they would help or at least point me in the right direction. They are Ebony Freeman, Treasure Blue and Leo Sullivan.

6. What book are you reading now?
I’m currently reading Exhale by Blaque really good book so far.

7. What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
When I’m not writing I like to relax in front of the TV while watching my favorite reality shows, keeping up with my team the Boston Celtics during Basketball season, shopping whether online or in stores.

8. Where do you get your ideas for your books?
Most of the ideas I have for the books that I have written, currently writing or planning on writing in the future all are either from personal experience, experiences that friends of mine have gone through or are going through and just having a little imagination to add to what I already have.

9. What new author has grasped your interest?
There are 2 new authors that have really grasped my interest with their writing styles and the way they tell their stories pulling you into them making you feel like you’re apart of it. The 1st author is Tnicyo her first book is titled “Hood Symphony” the 2nd author is Marie A. Norfleet her first book is titled “This Game Called”.

10. If you couldn’t be an author, what would your ideal career be?
If I couldn’t be an author I would pursue my modeling career fully seeing as that and fashion is my other passion/love.

11. What was your favorite chapter to write and why?
My favorite chapter to write in Broken Promise was Chapter 19: Revenge Is a Dish Best Served Hot!! I chose that chapter because Promise was able to come out of being the girl she’d always been holding everything in. She was able to get mad and do something about it. She got revenge on the one person who had wronged her family. My favorite chapter to write in Black Ice.. was  Chapter 25: It All Comes Down To This and the Epilogue. I chose this chapter because everything was brought to the light in this chapter there wasn’t anymore wondering, questioning, looking for answers it was all laid out for all eyes to see. The epilogue because no one thinks urban fiction stories can end good, but this is one that did with a lesson to be learned.

12. Why do you feel you had to tell this story?
I felt I had to tell this story because it felt right from within. You know how you try to do something, but it doesn’t feel right with your inner self? Well this did. It flowed from me as if it was meant for me to write. It tells a story about real life things. I believe everything in this story can and does happen every day.

13. Can you tell us about your upcoming book?
I can’t tell you much about my upcoming book because I’m keeping the title a secret until the cover is designed. My upcoming book is going to be filled with plenty of lies, twist and turns, a great plot and subplot, deceit because people aren’t always who they say they are even if you talk to and sleep with that person every night. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence sometimes you have to play in your own yard before you venture into unknown territory.

14. How do you market your book(s)?
I market my books any way I can rather it be online via Facebook, Twitter, Pin it, blog sites, flyers everywhere basically whatever I can do to get interest peaked toward my books I do.

15. Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?
My advice for aspiring authors is to write what you know and if you go into a topic/subject you don’t know do your research on it because a reader can tell when you haven’t lived that life or experienced any of the things you’re writing about basically just writing just to write. When you come into the literary world whether it’s through being published or self-publishing do your research intensively, don’t trust everybody you meet because everybody you meet doesn’t have your best interest in mind some are out for self and will take you down while they go to the top. Last, but not least I don’t care how many books you sell, how big your name gets or whatever stay Humble the same way you came in the literary world is the same way you should remain just more wiser as you journey through.
